Young Apprentices build skills and confidence at UWC Atlantic
UWC Atlantic’s historic campus is not only a hub of international education, it is also serving as a dynamic training ground for local young apprentices from Llantwit Major Comprehensive School. Through a partnership with the College’s experienced grounds and maintenance teams, Llantwit Major pupils are gaining practical, hands-on experience across a range of skilled trades - including carpentry, concreting, stonework, and plumbing. This initiative is designed to build real-world skills, confidence and career readiness among local students.
Scott, aged 15, has been part of the programme for several months, working at the College a few days each week. “I am really enjoying the experience, I’ve learnt carpentry, stonework, and concreting. We’ve demolished things and rebuilt them, so it’s been really rewarding to see a project through from start to finish. It’s teaching us a lot of useful, all-round skills. I’ve especially enjoyed working as part of a team, and I think this experience will help me as I want to join the army after school,” he added.
Fourteen-year-old Kayden also praised the range of experiences: “I’ve loved the different projects we’ve worked on. One week, we built a bike shed with wood, so I learnt a lot of practical skills, from cementing and carpentry to brickwork. I’m hoping to become a carpenter after school, so this apprentice programme has been really useful.”
Pete, a qualified plumber and one of the UWC Atlantic mentors, spoke highly of the students’ enthusiasm: “They’re very keen and eager to learn. We’ve had them working across several different trades, and it’s great to see young people getting stuck in and enjoying learning new skills. Both Scott and Kayden have said how rewarding it is to see a project through from start to finish, and to feel proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

This apprentice initiative is not only about skills, it’s about building confidence and providing a strong stepping stone into the world of work. Whether these young people go on to join the army, train as carpenters, or pursue other paths, they are laying strong foundations - both literally and figuratively - for their future.
Recently, the apprentices worked alongside the College’s maintenance team to repair the concrete slipway at UWC Atlantic’s seafront, preserving the site’s long-standing maritime and sailing history.
This collaboration reflects UWC Atlantic’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and education for all, grounded in the College’s mission to make education a force for good in the world.
