Trio of Oxford colleges led by AC alumni
For the first time, three of the Oxford University colleges are now led by alumni of Atlantic College. Jonathan Michie (AC 73-75) has been President of Kellogg College since 2008, Nick Leimu-Brown (AC 79-81) has been Principal of Linacre College since 2010; and they are now joined by Beth Breeze (formerly Beth Egan, AC 88-90) who became Principal of Harris Manchester College this academic year.
Beth says: “My time at Atlantic College was life-changing and is the basis for everything I have done since. I grew up without many material or intellectual resources but full of hope to do something useful. Winning a full scholarship to live and study alongside idealistic young people from across the world opened up a whole new world of opportunity, as well as life-long friends. I spent most of my career developing the field of Philanthropic Studies at the University of Kent, empowering non-profit professionals with the knowledge, tools and networks to lead and generate support for their charitable organisations. I am thrilled to now be leading Oxford’s only college exclusively for mature students which exists to ensure that age is no barrier to fulfilling talent and making a positive social contribution. I remain grateful to AC for putting me on the path to a meaningful and enjoyable life.”
Nick says: “Atlantic College taught me that diversity in all its forms is not simply a virtue but a catalyst for intellectual richness, creativity and innovation - a conviction that has shaped my career and my leadership of Linacre College.”
Jonathan says: "I was impressed by the people I met at Atlantic College, both when I was a student, and when our elder son Alex also attended AC (2006-8), so much so that I returned to be Chair of Governors for five years (2015-20). I'm delighted that the internationalism of the United World College movement is reflected at Kellogg College, and Oxford more generally."
"This is an extraordinary and proud moment for the entire Atlantic College community. To see three prestigious Oxford University colleges in the UK simultaneously led by AC alumni is a powerful testament to the enduring impact of a UWC education." Naheed Bardai, Principal, UWC Atlantic
